Do you know what type of smoke detectors you have? Did you ever think if there are any differences in them? Yes, definitely there are. At the today’s market there are two main types of smoke detectors. Their common feature is a sensor that detects smoke and fire differently, depending on the origin of the fire:

  • Ionization smoke detectors – they are more responsive to a flaming fire according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). These alarms use “ions,” or electrically charged particles, to help detect smoke in the air.

Photoelectric smoke detectors – their main feature is that they are using a light beam to help detect the presence of smoke.

So, how to choose the appropriate detectors? The thing is that NFPA recommends to have both types as you don’t know which type of fire could erupt in your home. And, the detectors are useless if they do not work properly. According to NFPA, an estimated 24 percent of smoke alarms failures were caused by dead batteries between 2010 to 2016.

Please, be careful and inspect your smoke detectors regularly!

More and more individuals and businesses are using solar bettery to save energy. It’s a great tendency, so let’s not forget about safety!

The batteries can be arranged in different ways to get the voltage you’ll need for your power inverter. If you are using a 1000 watt at12 volt power inverter, you will need 2 units of 6 volts batteries connected in series to come up with the 12 volts.

The most dangerous part of this process is the liquid in the battery. The liquid is sulfuric acid that will seriously burn you. As a safety precocious, always have some baking soda nearby to neutralize the acid in case you spilled some on your body.

Another safety tip says that the gasses that come off from the battery, hydrogen gas (H2), can be hazardous as well. It is highly flammable. Make sure you work with the batteries in an open space and no sparks or open flame nearby.

According to psychologists people need more time to adapt to cold season rather than to the warm one. This fact affects on our desire to turn up the thermostat, which, in turns, means that we should pay for all the warm we received. Is there any way to live in comfort temperature and not to pay more?

We offer a few tips that may help save your money:

  • track down the air leaks. There are always hidden air leaks around your windows and doors which need to be isolated to keep the warm inside the house;
  • check your air filter. Filters should be replaced or cleaned once a month. They serve for the right air circulation, so they should be clean to keep air in your house fresh and free of bacterial;
  • adjust the thermostat – try lower the temperature gradually overnight as at night you can cover yourself with warm blankets;
  • install a programmable thermostat – this new technology helps to regulate the temperature automatically and not thinking of it every day, just selecting the right programme.

There are also several tips how to warm up your house. If you have a fireplace and don’t use it, keep your fireplace damper closed. It’s also a good idea to place rugs on the floor, no matter if you have tile, linoleum or concrete floors. These rugs could save you a couple of dollars. When you are using an oven, keep the door  open for a few minutes to warm your kitchen. If you have ceiling fan, set it to run in a clockwise direction. This trick will push warm air down from the ceiling.

Weather is very unexpected and sometimes may cause serious damage to buildings. Are there any ways to safeguard your roof?

Your drainage system carries water and debris away from your roof and back onto the ground, where it belongs. But when your gutters are clogged, water backs up onto your roof and siding. This speeds up leaks and puts you at risk of more subtle problems, such as mold and roof rot. To keep your home in the clear, make sure to get up on the ladder at least twice a year—once in the fall, and once in the spring.

Missing shingles are a problem. unless you have water dripping onto your kitchen table, it’s one of those issues that’s easy to ignore. However, you may not be as leak-free as you think. Water infiltration can occur in attics or inside walls—places where you may not see it until you have a full-blown mold infestation on your hands. Do yourself a favor and hammer out replacement shingles sooner, rather than later. It could save you a lot of trouble next time it rains.
